Project Description
This community service project aims to bring a cost effective
means of entertainment and education for the lower socio economic
segment of society.
After
spending a day with a factory worker, we learnt something heart
rending. Inadequate food, minimum wage, crushed with ever growing
inflation, frustrated by the state of turmoil that corrupts
the entire social fabric, the only recourse to happiness this
worker had, was his 20 minute stop at a food kiosk on his way
home after his shift ended.
Once
there, he forgot the worries of the world while watching TV.
This highlights the importance of entertainment.
To
change this state of affairs and add color to a dull existence,
we plan on establishing a “street theater” group
composed of people, who are from the working class. Street theatre
is a popular and interactive medium for raising awareness on
different social issues. In fact it has been so popular that
NGO’s and even political parties in the 3rd world countries
utilize it for delivering their messages in communities. In
Pakistan this concept is relatively less used.
We
will train10-12 factory workers and invite experts to deliver
lectures to a selected group, so that participants may educate
and entertain their respective communities and fellow workers.
Our
task will be to oversee the entire operation, train the group
and organize performances in different communities or functions.
Objective
The objective behind this project is to provide blue collared
and unskilled workers with a cost effective medium to entertain
and educate their communities.
